The Bible begins with a simple, powerful truth: there is only one God. This is called monotheism. It means we do not worship many gods, or a family of gods, or competing gods—but one God who created everything, loves His people, and leads us.
In the Old Covenant, God told Israel:
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!”
— Deuteronomy 6:4, NKJV
This was Israel’s most important belief. They were surrounded by nations that worshiped many gods, but God wanted His people to know that He alone is their God and King.
Jesus Also Taught the Same Thing
Many people think the Old Testament teaches one thing and Jesus teaches something different, but Jesus actually repeated the same truth. When someone asked Him what the greatest commandment was, Jesus said:
“The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
— Mark 12:29, NKJV
Jesus didn’t change monotheism—He confirmed it.
What About Jesus?
Jesus is not a separate god or a second God. He is:
the Son of God,
sent from God,
revealing God,
and perfectly representing God.
The Bible says Jesus speaks God’s words and does God’s works because God is in Him, and He is in God (John 14:10–11). But the Bible never says there are “two gods.” Instead, it teaches that Jesus is the perfect image of the one true God.
Why Monotheism Matters
Believing in one God gives us:
one Leader to follow
one Law to obey
one Source of truth
one Savior who brings us close to God
one Kingdom we belong to
God doesn’t want us confused about who He is. He wants us to trust that the same God who created everything is the same God who saves us through His Son and guides us by His Spirit.
Monotheism is simple but powerful. It reminds us that God alone is worthy of worship and obedience—and that we can build our whole life around Him.
